Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-ohki OVA 5 Episode 04
天地無用! 魎皇鬼 OVA 5 Ep. 4
SPOILER Summary/Synopsis:
Kenshi wakes to see Tenchi and his harem returning from the beach, looking quite happy. The girls of Banjo Island take Kenshi to train. Dr. Miron and Jovia attempt to stop Kenshi, but are quickly defeated by Palty. Tenchi’s girls set up a a cookout. Tenchi invites Shou to the “Victims of the Stupid Hags Club”, who’s members discuss the troublesome women in their lives. Kenshi spends the rest of his day in training.
That night, Tenchi and Washu are discussing things when Washu senses intruders. Tenchi teleports to where Shou (in a Guardian) and Minamida (Seina) are monitoring the situation. Tenchi takes care of the inbound missiles while Seina activates his ancient mecha Zinv to handle the submarine forces coming to attack. Shou takes care of a satellite attack. Meanwhile, Katsuhito has a discussion with a leader from Earth, regarding the attack on Banjo Island.
Back on the island, Seina, Tenchi, and Shou note how self-reliant Kenshi is. Kenshi is again with the island’s girls, but Miron and Jovia again show up. Jovia summons water dragons Laval and the improved Avalul. However, a giant mecha named Yomotsuookami appears, causing Jovia great concern. The dragons panic and turn on Juvia and Miron. Tennyo was in the mecha.
Kenshi’s training resumes. When time comes for Tenchi’s clan to leave with Kenshi, he gets the island’s girls to agree to come visit. When the group gets home, the island girls are waiting for them.
Thoughts/Review:
Well, Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-ohki OVA 5 Episode 04 continued Kenshi’s training and explanation for why he was so good in War on Geminar. And there was some humor, and a bit of a continuation with Tenchi and the harem.
More Paradise War Meets War on Geminar
I was surprised to see that Kajishima-sensei used Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-ohki OVA 5 Episode 04 to continue displaying Kenshi’s training. After the previous episode ended with Tenchi officially going to ask the girls to join his harem, I thought we might get to see him get married. The only thing we got on that front was the “afterglow” look on the faces of the girls, Tenchi’s “just got laid” look, and Ryo-ohki’s embarrassment when Kenshi asked why they all looked so happy.
I’m sure readers of Paradise War loved seeing more stuff with Dird, Alea, Apuesta, and Palty, to say nothing of Miron, and Minamida (Seina). And to be honest, this episode required the least amount of knowledge of the novels. The talk of Palty’s trauma was probably the only real thing that came from the novels.
I did appreciate how the episode explains how Kenshi was as good as he was in War on Geminar. I accepted it when I watched that anime series because Kenshi is Tenchi’s brother. But seeing how Kenshi learned to be so self-sufficient was an appreciated touch. I should take time to watch by War on Geminar BDs after OVA 5 is done.
Unexpected Katsuhito
Throughout the entire canon Tenchi Muyo! franchise, Yosho’s Katsuhito form has mostly been shown as an old man who enjoys trolling those around him. Sure, we saw Katsuhito fight Kagato in OVA 1, but then he literally hands the baton to Tenchi in a comical fashion. In OVA 3, we did see some brief, serious periods for him. But otherwise, he’s just the grandfather figure. And indeed, it is easy to forget that Katsuhito is just a disguise for Yosho.
However, in Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-ohki OVA 5 Episode 04, we see Katsuhito in not only a serious moment, but one showing how powerful he is on Earth. OVA 3 mentioned Katsuhito taking Rea to Tokyo and meeting the Emperor. But actually seeing Katsuhito communicating with an Earth (presumably Japanese) leader was something else. Further, Katsuhito is laying out Jurai’s version of the Prime Directive.
Final Thoughts and Conclusion
Let me wrap up my review of Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-ohki OVA 5 Episode 04 with some final thoughts.
- Most of the comedy came from Miron and Jovia’s failing antics. It didn’t make me laugh much, but then that’s probably because I’m really tired any more.
- Once again, we get to see why the canon Tenchi Muyo! series can’t have any real action pieces. Tenchi is OP, as he should be. But Seina is pretty powerful with Zinv, as is Shou with his Guardian unit.
- Speaking of Zinv, it was nice seeing that mecha again. I don’t remember seeing the Yomotsuookami mecha, but I believe it is from the novels.
In the end, Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-ohki OVA 5 Episode 04 was a fun episode that didn’t go where I expected.

With that opening scene on point, I figured out what was going on. And we’re now on the way for Tenchi to start having kids soon. Of course, this is the perspectives of those I’ve heard on the forums. It was already clear from the beginning and in the LN that Tenchi is going to keep his harem and make a huge family out of it. At least Ryoko is a part of it, since Ryoko X Tenchi shippers thought those two are more of a couple than the other crew. As for me, it’s none of my business whose who.
Kenshi’s training was a focal point here, which is why he was pretty good by the time in War on Geninar. And considering I knew nothing about Paradise War, I knew nothing of Shou and his journey as well. But Tenchi, Seina and Shou are very strong fighters, although it can be boring without a challenge that pushes them. At this point, only people who have powers of Gods can put them to the tasks.
The thing with Earth with Kasuhito I didn’t forget, and I’m not surprising at all, considering how much Earth has to go to be advanced to which they are so far away, and they are being treated as too primitive. Some people would call that a certain word I most definitely won’t say. And the strange thing is, the only reason Jurians at least a certain group got this far, is because Tsunami hooked them up when their ancestors were originally Earthlings. Ironically. It takes a lot of years to be advanced and considering said Earth doesn’t experienced anything major that hurts their progress. As as far as I know, going overboard with my thoughts is that I’ve only seen some Japanese have some interactions with Jurains. And it never goes beyond what goes on with other countries. The Masaki’s and etc, stayed in one place, and that’s Japan.
In any case, that comes down to two OVA episodes left, and the 5th one is going to go back to Earth.
I now think this will happen next episode.
Hahaha! I was part of that crew back in the day. I still think they have the closest relationship. But this is based in part on the fact that neither address the other with honorifics.
Pretty much.
Well, Earth is pretty primitive when compared to the tech of Jurai and other planets in the galaxy. It seems that Jurai tests humans and the only two to pass the tests were Shou and the doctor.
Hard to believe there are only two left. 😅
Quite frankly speaking the Ryo-ohki continuity has been very off putting since the aftermath of “Here Comes Jurai” the episodes since have had their moments but overall they’re just cramming too many extra characters into the equation for most fans to keep up. And it’s difficult to get attached to characters when they only appear once or twice and when they have no character developing arcs to speak of. I did enjoy the bit of action in this episode and the implications of what happened with Tenchi and his girls. I’ll forever be a Tenchi/Ryoko shipper at heart, but it’s not as if I’ve got any dislike for his other girls. I really hope there’s a season focused on the main cast again they’re very much overdue a return to form.
Western fans, frustratingly yes. For Japanese fans, this is “lovely fanservice” as the Japanese already know all these characters. So they love seeing them in anime form.
Haha! I hear ya.
We’ll see if they do another OVA or not.
Just knowing that Tenchi did Sasami really pissed me off… its Sasami!
And Sasami is Tsunami. Plus, Sasami is an adult now. 😉
